Independence Day was a fabulous family day!
Our church had a patriotic service with songs like "God Bless America," a corporate recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance (which is a big deal because a whole generation of kids don't even know it since it's widespread removal from public schools) and a time honoring our military. They asked that all military members wear their uniforms for the service. It was neat to see all the men and women in our congregation who daily serve our country and who continue to grant us freedom and independence.
After church, we came home and got ready for our church's tailgate party that night. For a little friendly competition, the Sunday school classes each hosted a food booth, most with a theme. Our class decided to base our food on the oil spill.
We called our booth, BP Grill and served a menu of:
Oiled Bird, with or without Sand
(Teriyaki chicken skewers with or without couscous)
Seaweed Slaw
(Purple & Green Coleslaw)
Oiled Fishes
(Chocolate covered pretzel fish)
Tarball Punch
(Blue punch with floating grapes)
Boom Brownies
(Brownies decorated with orange lines like booms)
Unbelievably, we did not win. We had fun, though and the food was delicious!
Our contribution to the group was the "Oiled Fish" and Alan spent almost 3 hours hand-dipping over 2400 goldfish crackers!
We ended our evening at a friend's house on the water, enjoying fireworks all around us.

I can't believe you didn't win; your food ideas were awesome! That's a lot of fish that Alan made!
Your church service sounded so great. I was disappointed that we didn't sing any patriotic songs :o( And having the service men and women wear their uniforms was such a nice salute to them. What a great church!
