So, as promised, here's the expanded explanation of our move. If you are leary about poop stories, don't read any further.
The week of our move, we were still cramming in lunches and dinners with friends, fixing up little things in the house, cleaning the house, going to doctors appointments, dealing with packers and movers and running countless errands. Fortunately, we were SO blessed with Grandma Hart's arrival, so we had an extra set of hands to help (Really, like four extra sets cause she's amazing!) and my sweet friend, Jana kept the boys the night before and morning of our departure so cleaning could happen without them around.
Without the help, I would surely have gone insane! The packing process went smoothly...done in ONE day, which is unheard of. Moving day came, though, and the driver promptly told me that all of our stuff would not fit on his truck. Um, excuse me? We were planning a door-to-door move! That afternoon, the stuff they could not cram onto the big truck was picked up and put into storage in San Antonio, to be delivered at an unknown later date and time.
That was just the beginning of our challenges...
The next morning, with the house all cleaned, we loaded the cars and were set to pull out of the driveway when my car wouldn't start. The battery was dead. We got it jumped, went to get a battery, couldn't get one (leading to more drama later), picked up lunch, picked up kids and finally got on I-10, only 4 hours later than planned. We made it to Houston in 3 hours...looking good...the next hour to the Texas border, however, took 5, yes FIVE hours. Two more jump starts and a new battery later, we were able to drive and stop for gas without car drama.
And at that point, we no longer needed car drama. We had poop drama. Keegan hadn't pooed in two days and kept telling us his tummy hurt and he needed to poo. He didn't eat dinner and couldn't go poo, so while Alan got the old battery out and put in a new one in the dark Walmart parking lot, I went in to the store and bought him some help. By the time we got back out the parking lot, he didn't need the suppositories. We busted out the potty right there in the dark parking lot and he pooped the most massive poo ever. Poor kid! Then he had the runs...big mess! Ick!
Thinking we were done with that, we got moving again, crossed the border of Texas (just 8, yes, EIGHT hours after leaving SA) and headed across the swamps of Louisiana. Some time into Louisiana, Connor began to complain about his tummy. In the middle of Henderson Swamp, on the 18 mile bridge through said swamp, Connor really needed to go. So in the middle of the bridge, there was an exit ramp down into the swamp. What better place to bust out the potty again? He relieved himself, which was terribly traumatic, since we were in a dark swamp with rain and lots of bugs.
Speaking of bugs, we managed to fill my car with lots of flying bugs who were very attracted to the light on in the car. We needed the light to poo in the dark swamp, though. So we got back onto I-10, swatting mosquitos when not 10 minutes down the road, Keegan had another accident! The car reeked, it was filled with bugs and it was dark and raining outside. Grandma and I were laughing so hard at that point cause what else were we to do?! We had to pull off the highway again just 10 miles shy of our hotel so we could address Keegan's poo again.
At almost 1am, we finally checked into our Holiday Inn Express and crawled into bed.
The next day, the pouring rain and a few left over mosquitoes were the only challenges we had to deal with on the road. The next set of challenges came when we arrived at our rental house.
We are very thankful for our house here, but it's been a frustrating start to life here. The house is very nice and the neighborhood is gorgeous, but unlike my toilets and baseboards in Texas when we left, which were so clean you could have licked them, this house was FILTHY. I know I have high standards, but by anyone's standards, the house was dirty. It was very frustrating. The walls really were peach (thank goodness for paint), the dishwasher was broken, there's a water leak in the one bathroom, the carpet is 11 years old and was not professionally cleaned for us, the blinds are filthy, breaking and falling down, etc...
It will all work out, though. God got us here safely, through pouring rain, in good health, in spite of the poop and car problems.
This was the view that Grandma, the boys and I had the whole drive. Assuming we could see through the pouring rain! (I think the U-Haul was bigger than Alan's Jeep!)
Goodbye, Texas house.
